We're a neighbourhood restaurant in Downtown Dartmouth, serving up chef-inspired seasonal fare for lunch, brunch and dinner. 

THE CONCEPT

The Canteen on Portland is located in an 1,800 sq ft space once occupied by the Sun Sun Café - a family-run restaurant on Portland Street for more than 40 years. 

We have been working hard with the team at By + Large Studio to design a relaxed, inviting and unpretentious environment that will feel like home for everyone. Our goal is to create a space that will accommodate large family gatherings, date nights and business lunches. Simply put - we want to create a home away from home for the community.

THE LOCATION

When considering a new location for The Canteen we knew that it would be somewhere in Downtown Dartmouth. Dartmouth is our home, it’s where the business began and this community is the reason for our success. 

We wanted to have street frontage and a space big enough to accommodate our new concept. It quickly became apparent that Portland Street was the natural choice. We have been fortunate enough to find our dream space and we're currently working with a local developer to bring our concept to life.

Crafting The Classics with Care.

We will bring the same food philosophy to The Canteen on Portland that has successfully guided our current business - honest, unpretentious food, made with love.

Our menu will be influenced by classic French, Italian and traditional Nova Scotian cuisine - with a little bit of Renée's magic thrown in. We plan to offer simple and approachable menus that are sure to please every palate - including kids ! 

We're also excited be offering a rotating list of local wines and craft beers that we love so much.

The Meat 

All of the meat, eggs and fish served at The Canteen are carefully sourced from local growers across Nova Scotia. We strive to serve top quality meats that have been raised humanely and sustainably. 

The Bread

Ciabatta, challah, pita, rye, bagels and more. All of our bread is baked in house on a daily basis to suit our changing line-up of sandwiches. After all, what's a sandwich without the bread?

The Toppings

An awesome sandwich is about a lot more than just bread and meat. That's why we bring in the best local cheeses and seasonal produce in addition to making all of our own sauces, pickles and slaws from scratch.

Renée Lavallée

OWNER & CHEF

Born and bred in small town Quebec, Renée (aka The Feisty Chef) never thought she would end up cooking for a living, but after more than twenty years in the biz, she has yet to question her calling. She has worked at notable restaurants throughout Canada, as well as spending time working in Italy and the Caribbean.

Several years ago, Renée stepped away from the restaurant world to spend time consulting, hosting the popular Canteen Family Dinners and raising a family. The Canteen is Renee's third "baby" (after her other kids, Zoe and Philippe). She is super excited to get back to focussing on the basics, so she can cook inspired food with amazing people.

 

The Team

We are a group of dedicated culinary and service professionals united by our passion for honest food and exceptionally hospitality. Our menu at The Canteen is created in collaboration by the entire team. Upon visiting our restaurant, one of the first things that you'll notice is that we work in a kitchen without walls. We don't want to hide how much we love our work and our customers. If you have any questions or comments, don't be shy - we love to talk food!
