Dinner is served Tuesday through Sunday — Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday we close at 9pm, and Friday and Saturday we stay open until 10pm. We are closed on Mondays.

Do you take reservations?

We encourage reservations to ensure a table is waiting for you — especially on weekends and during the summer season. You can book online through OpenTable or call us at 902-425-9272. That said, we always hold back some tables and bar seats for walk-in guests, so don't hesitate to stop by.

Is The Canteen licensed?

Yes, we're fully licensed. We offer a rotating selection of local and regional craft beers, wines by the glass and bottle, and a range of spirits and house craft cocktails. We're proud to feature Nova Scotia producers wherever we can behind the bar, just as we do in the kitchen.

Do you have a patio?

We have a covered and heated patio that is open seasonally from mid-June through mid-October. It's a great spot to enjoy a meal outdoors in the heart of downtown Dartmouth. Patio seating is available on a walk-in basis only — we don't take reservations for patio tables.

Is The Canteen family-friendly?

Absolutely. Families are always welcome at The Canteen. We have high chairs, a change table, and a dedicated kids' menu to make sure the whole family is taken care of.

THE FOOD

How would you describe the food at The Canteen?

We serve approachable, classic dishes with a creative twist from Chef and co-owner Renée Lavallée. The menu has a strong focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients with an emphasis on Nova Scotia seafood. Everything on the plate is made from scratch in-house — from the sauces to the bread — and the menu changes four times a year to reflect what's best in season. We also run weekly specials across all meal periods to keep things interesting.

How important is local sourcing to you?

It's at the core of everything we do. We work with a wide range of local suppliers across Nova Scotia to source our meat, seafood, produce, cheese, craft beer, and local wines. Every plate is an opportunity to highlight the incredible ingredients this province produces, and we take that seriously. When you eat at The Canteen, you're tasting Nova Scotia.

What are your must-order dishes?

Beyond the Crobster Roll — which deserves its own section below — some of our most beloved dishes include our seafood chowder, scallops and risotto, The Canteen burger, and our carrot cake. These are the dishes guests come back for time and again, and a few of them have never left the menu for good reason.

Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes — we have options for vegetarians, vegans, and those with gluten sensitivities or allergies. Dietary information is noted on our menus, and our servers are well-versed in how to guide you through the options and accommodate your needs. If you have a specific concern, don't hesitate to ask — we'll always do our best to take care of you.

Does the menu change?

Our menu evolves with the seasons — typically four times a year — so there's always something new to discover. Some dishes are permanent fixtures because our guests simply won't let us take them off. Others rotate to reflect the best of what's available locally. We also offer weekly specials during lunch, brunch, and dinner service.

THE CROBSTER ROLL

What is the Crobster Roll?

The Crobster Roll is The Canteen's signature dish — a combination of fresh Nova Scotia snow crab and lobster tossed with grainy mustard, truffle aioli, and fresh dill, served on a bed of shredded lettuce inside a buttered and toasted long bun that we bake in-house. It's the dish that defines us, and it's been turning heads since the day Renée put it on the menu nearly 15 years ago.

Where did the Crobster Roll come from?

Chef Renée Lavallée created the Crobster Roll almost 15 years ago, born out of her love for Nova Scotia snow crab and a belief that it would complement our local lobster perfectly. She was right — guests loved it from day one, and it has been a seasonal icon ever since. The recipe has evolved slightly over the years, but the current version is the best yet. As Renée says: why fix what isn't broken?

Why is the Crobster Roll only available seasonally?

The Crobster Roll is a seasonal dish because Nova Scotia snow crab season runs from April through September. We're committed to using only the freshest local product, which means we don't serve the Crobster Roll year-round. It's available at The Canteen from May through October — and that limited window is a big part of what makes it special. That said, we do occasionally bring it back for a surprise appearance in the off-season, so it's worth following us on Instagram (@thecanteenns) to stay in the loop.

What should I order with the Crobster Roll?

The classic pairing is our hand-cut fries — simple, satisfying, and exactly right. If you're looking for something lighter, our kale salad is a great match. On the drink side, there is no better pairing than a glass of Tidal Bay, Nova Scotia’s appellation white wine. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

How much does the Crobster Roll cost?

The Crobster Roll is market priced, meaning the price fluctuates based on the seasonal cost of fresh Nova Scotia lobster and snow crab. We keep the price as fair as we can while ensuring we're always using the best quality local product available. Check our current menu or call us for today's price.

OUR STORY

Who are the people behind The Canteen?

The Canteen is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Chef Renée Lavallée and Doug Townsend — and it truly is a family business. Both of their kids grew up in the restaurant and are now active members of the team, making real contributions to what The Canteen is today. You'll often find Renée and Doug on the floor, in the kitchen, or behind the bar — this is not an absentee ownership operation.

Who is Chef Renée Lavallée?

Renée Lavallée is the chef and co-owner of The Canteen, and one of Nova Scotia's most celebrated culinary voices. Originally from Shawville, Quebec, she has called Nova Scotia home for over 20 years. After years of working in top restaurants around the world, she returned to put down roots and open The Canteen. Renée competed on Season 7 of Top Chef Canada on Food Network Canada, finishing in the top five as the sole Atlantic Canadian chef in the competition. She was named Taste of Nova Scotia Culinary Ambassador of the Year in 2018, and has been voted Best Chef in The Coast's Best of Halifax Reader Survey for nine consecutive years. She is a passionate champion of local food producers and can often be found at farmers' markets with her family on her days off.

Who is Doug Townsend?

Doug Townsend is the co-owner and operator of The Canteen, and the person who keeps everything running behind the scenes when he’s not chatting up guests in the dining. Originally from Halifax, Doug spent years in marketing before shifting his focus to the food industry, including a role promoting Nova Scotia's culinary scene worldwide with Taste of Nova Scotia. In 2016, he partnered fully with Renée to commit to The Canteen together. Doug is deeply involved in the Dartmouth community — he has served on the boards of Discover Halifax and The North Grove, and is a recipient of the Dalhousie University Aurum Alumni Award for his contributions during the pandemic.

How do we want guest to feel when they leave the restaurant?

We always want people to feel at home. That means approachable, warm, and unpretentious — while also delivering some of the best food you'll find anywhere, served with genuine, personable hospitality. We often say that we don't want to be the best restaurant in the city. We want to be people's favourite restaurant. There's a difference, and it matters to us.

What makes The Canteen different from other restaurants in the Halifax-Dartmouth area?

The Canteen is a rare mix of a true neighbourhood restaurant — with a loyal community of regulars — and a destination worth crossing the harbour for. It's a genuine family business, deeply rooted in Dartmouth, built on authentic relationships with local producers, community partners, and guests who've been coming for years. Authenticity isn't a brand strategy for us — it's just how we operate. We think people feel that when they walk through the door.

COMMUNITY

What is The North Grove and what is our relationship with them?

The North Grove is a Dartmouth community hub that has served the community for over 25 years, offering a dignified and dynamic space for people to connect through family, support, food, and friendship. Their Community Food Centre is one of only 13 such centres across Canada. Both Renée and Doug have volunteered with The North Grove in various capacities over the years — Doug served on their Board of Directors for eight years, including two years as Board Chair, and Renée spent significant time volunteering in the Community Food Centre, helping with meals, consulting on kitchen equipment, and training the team.

What was The Canteen Community Kitchen?

When COVID-19 forced The Canteen to close in March 2020 — resulting in the hardest decision of Renée and Doug's careers, laying off the majority of their 30-person team — they quickly turned their attention to how they could use their facility and remaining staff to help the community. In April 2020, The Canteen transitioned to The Canteen Community Kitchen, partnering with The Dartmouth North Community Food Centre and Margaret's House to prepare 300–400 meals per week for distribution to those in need across Dartmouth. Over the course of the program, the initiative produced over 14,000 meals for North Dartmouth families. The partnership also evolved into a broader fundraising effort that raised over $75,000 for The North Grove.

Is your community partnership with The North Grove still active?

Very much so. The formal Community Kitchen program wound down as pandemic restrictions eased, but our relationship with The North Grove has never been stronger. Our team volunteers at The North Grove several times a year, and every December we run a fundraising campaign on their behalf. It's one of the things we're most proud of as a business.

Why does community involvement matter so much to The Canteen?

Community has been at the heart of everything we do since day one. Our stated company purpose is "to create positive change in the community that we serve" — and that's not just a line on a wall. It's the reason we do what we do. Dartmouth has given so much to The Canteen over the years, and finding meaningful ways to give back isn't an obligation — it's honestly what gets us out of bed in the morning.
