Our History
We opened a small but mighty sandwich shop inside the well-known coffee spot, Two If By Sea, in Downtown Dartmouth. With a focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients and bold flavors, the shop quickly gained a loyal following. After nearly three years of success, The Canteen outgrew its original space and expanded to a new location on Portland Street. This move transformed the business into a full-service restaurant with an expanded menu featuring locally inspired dishes. Alongside the restaurant, Renée also introduced Little C, a takeout counter offering quick, delicious meals.

Renée Lavallée

Originally from Shawville, Quebec, has made Nova Scotia home for over 20 years. After years of working in top restaurants around the world, she returned to her roots to open The Canteen. In just three years, Renée expanded with Little C, a full-service restaurant and takeout spot, just two blocks from the original location. A champion of local food producers, Renée is dedicated to showcasing the best of Nova Scotia's culinary offerings and can often be found at farmers' markets with her family.
Doug Townsend
CO-OWNER & OPERATOR

Originally from Halifax, Doug shifted his focus from marketing to the food industry after working with Taste of Nova Scotia, where he promoted the province's culinary scene worldwide. In 2016, Doug partnered with Renée to fully commit to their shared vision. Doug is deeply involved in the Dartmouth community, serving on the boards of Discover Halifax and The North Grove, and is a recipient of the Dalhousie University Alum Award for his contributions during the pandemic.

Our menu at The Canteen is created in collaboration by the entire team. Upon visiting our restaurant, one of the first things that you'll notice is that our kitchen is open to the dining room.
