OPENING THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 6TH

We’re doing it! After 2½ amazing years The Canteen has made the move to Portland Street. A new location, new space, new hours, new menus, new us! We’ve outgrown our old space on Ochterloney Street and we’re excited to bring something new and exciting to Downtown Dartmouth.

The Canteen on Portland is a friendly neighbourhood restaurant offering the same delicious sandwiches, soups & salads for lunch, but we've also added an evening dinner service and a killer weekend brunch. Yes - weekend brunch! 

THE SPACE

The Canteen on Portland is located in an 1,800 sq ft space once occupied by the Sun Sun Café - a family-run restaurant on Portland Street for more than 40 years. 

We have been working hard with the team at By + Large Studio to design a relaxed, inviting and unpretentious environment that will feel like home for everyone. Our goal is to create a space that will accommodate large family gatherings, date nights and business lunches. Simply put - we want to create a home away from home for the community.
 

WHY PORTLAND STREET?

When considering a new location for The Canteen we knew that it would be somewhere in Downtown Dartmouth. Dartmouth is our home, it’s where the business began and this community is the reason for our success. 

We wanted to have street frontage and a space big enough to accommodate our new concept. It quickly became apparent that Portland Street was the natural choice. We were fortunate enough to find our dream space to bring this concept to life.

THE FOOD & DRINK

We have brought the same food philosophy to The Canteen on Portland that has successfully guided our existing business - honest, unpretentious food, made with love.

Our menu is influenced by classic French, Italian and traditional Nova Scotian cuisine - with a little bit of Renée's magic thrown in. We offer simple and approachable menus that are sure to please every palate - including kids ! 

We're also excited be offering a rotating list of local wines and craft beers that we love so much.

WHY KICKSTARTER?

We’ve turned to Kickstarter last October to provide our customers and the rest of the community with an opportunity to play a part in building our new business. 

The community responded in a way that far exceeded our expectation. We were able to raise over $65,000 in less that three weeks! 

Backing our project through Kickstarter not only provided us with much needed start-up capital, but it gives our backers an opportunity to try out the restaurant when it opens at a discounted rate. Win-win! We could not do this without you! Thanks for all of your support!
